THE FREQUENCY is a bold new monthly live speaker series supporting new energies, emerging thought leaders, and connections. Internationally renowned DJ/producer, TEDx speaker, Recording Academy Chicago Governor, and Collaboraction Executive Director DJ Lady D is introducing THE FREQUENCY to amplify voices, cultivate dialogue, and inspire collective action around today’s most pressing cultural issues. Lady D will bring together artists, activists, civic leaders, and changemakers for immersive experiences that blend music, storytelling, and conversation.
THE FREQUENCY continues in July with an evening exploring hip hop, literacy, storytelling, and cultural memory with one of Chicago's most visionary artists, Roy Kinsey.
ABOUT ROY KINSEY
Roy Kinsey is a Chicago-born rapper and librarian whose work lives at the intersection of hip-hop, literature, and social justice. As the founder of Rapbrary, he created a sanctuary where books, banned stories, and Black art thrive. His music, including Dandelions: Gods Don’t Cry, explores themes of identity, healing, and transformation. A proud Black queer artist and child of the Great Migration, Roy uses storytelling to preserve legacy, inspire resilience, and shift narratives. Roy’s work has been recognized by NPR, the Chicago Tribune, and Billboard, and he’s a 2024–25 Performance Resident with Arts + Public Life at the University of Chicago. Named, "Chicagoan of the Year" for Pop Music by Chicago Tribune in 2025, Kinsey's new children's book, Deangelo and the Dandelion, a children’s book rooted in self-worth, softness, and resilience on Chicago’s West Side, was recently released and is available through booksellers everywhere. Through his art, Roy attempts to redefine what it means to be a griot of our time.
